Last weekend, a group of Strictly Sail Hobie Kayak Fishing Team members ventured to Paris, Tennessee to the Kayak Bass Fishing National Championship. Our guys were looking forward to fishing Kentucky Lake out of their Hobie Kayaks, but we didn’t quite expect the big winnings one team member brought home!
We love to see our team members on the road, fishing these tournaments year-round, representing Strictly Sail, meeting new people, and showing off their prized Hobie Kayaks.
To qualify for the National Championship, you first need to do well in local club tournaments, monthly online tournaments, or some of the bigger KBF tournaments throughout the year. Kurt Smits earned his entry through the Buckeye Kayak Fishing Trail competing against many solid anglers throughout 2016. We were fortunate enough to have two cabins full of guys from Ohio to compete in the biggest Kayak Fishing Tournament yet!
After the first day, Kurt Smits was in 2nd place with 99.75″ for his total length of his five longest bass, sitting only a half and inch from first place! The excitement carried all the way into Day 2 of the tournament. We came back to the check-in and waited patiently for the results. We knew our Ohio group did fairly well from conversing with all the other anglers from across the country. Finally, at 3 o’clock in the morning after lots of caffeine, pizza, conversation and anxiety levels rising, They started to share the final results.
We were proud to have three guys from our Ohio cabins in the top 20 with Kurt Smits sitting at the top of the 359 other great kayak anglers with first place with 188.50 inches! (Not to mention a check for $40,500!!!!!) We are so excited for Kurt and wish him well in all of his future tournaments.
Congratulations to the Ohio guys in the top 20 in the KayakBassFishing National Championship
