Hobie 16 Mast Base replacement. How-To
The Mast Base on the Hobie 16 is a very common replacement Hobie part which usually breaks when raising or lowering the mast. When raising the mast of your Hobie 16 make sure the ball on the mast base doesn’t get caught on the front upper lip of the mast step. You can prevent this by using one hand to bring the bottom of the mast back on the boat as you raise the mast, giving the mast base clearance to fit in the mast step.
When removing the old Hobie 16 mast base casting use a 3/16” drill bit to drill out all the old rivets. Inspect the bottom of the mast at this point. If the hold in the mast have been ripped out you may want to cut off ½” from the bottom of the mast to start with all new holes. Use your 3/16” drill again to make four new holds for the new stainless rivets in the new casting.
